March 22, 2013 1st Cactus Flower

Lovely sunny day today.  74 degrees with a light breeze to prevent too much over heating in the sun.  I'm starting out with the littlest flowers.  These tiny green plants manage to grow through the gravel.  You'd be tiny and frail too if you only got a thimble full of water to drink.

I am not sure what type of cactus this is - not a barrel cactus which bloomed before we got here in Feb.
This cactus is not as round and stocky as a barrel cactus.  It leans to the left and has these 2 blooms on the side near the top.  This flower is magnificent.  Someone said the bloom only lasts 1 day.  I'll check on it tomorrow to see if the second flower will open.
