Hummingbird Quilters rent Buena High School and stuff their huge cafeteria room with wonderful quilts. One of my friends from Kenosha Hospice Alliance has a sister who lives here and is very involved in this magnificent quilt show. There is always a "challenge" topic for small quilts. Last year it was, "Make a wall hanging that uses recycled items." Here's a picture of my 2014 favorite. The actual empty tea envelopes were quilted in place.
This year the challenge was to make a quilt that represents a song. I will number these and you can guess what the song is. Answers below.

Quilting is an amazing art form. Historically, quilts were made for warmth and to make use of any leftover or partially worn fabric. These are vintage quilts. Some of these patterns were made by my Mother. Very small pieces of fabric sew together with intricate geometrical precision.
The shapes are one indication of tremendous art. Pattern colors on a presentation background, completed by creative edging make a true work of art. Quilters have an special "eye" for beautiful creations.
"Bird Dance." The birds are appliqued using wool as a base and then embellished with all kinds of special embroidery stitches with thread and yarn.
"Beautiful Arizona." Lots of cacti and desert flowers.
"Asian Delight". Not all of these have southwestern themes
Machine Embroidery. There are table size computerized sewing machines on sale here. This quilt show had amazing fabric to purchase, and every specialized sewing machine you could imagine. Quilting has gone high tech, but hand quilting has it's own competition. Here's a close up. The colors were spectacular against the black background.
Must take a picture of anything with music. This is entitled Soul Soother
